North Central Province
Capital: Anuradhapura. |
The North Central Province of Sri Lanka is a historically rich and agriculturally significant region, consisting of the Anuradhapura and Polonnaruwa districts. Often referred to as the heartland of ancient Sri Lanka, it is home to two of the country’s former capitals—Anuradhapura and Polonnaruwa—both UNESCO World Heritage Sites known for their magnificent ruins, stupas, and ancient reservoirs (tanks).
The province plays a vital role in the country’s agriculture, especially rice cultivation, thanks to its extensive irrigation systems, some of which date back over a thousand years. It is largely rural and serene, with a landscape of dry zone forests, reservoirs, and farmland. The North Central Province offers a glimpse into Sri Lanka’s glorious past while supporting its present-day food security.
